The Priority Cascade for Tax-Advantaged Accounts

How to order 401(k) matching, HSAs, Roth IRAs, and taxable brokerage allocations to minimize lifetime tax friction.

Every dollar invested through a tax-advantaged vehicle escapes either income tax today, capital gains tax over time, or dividend taxes along the way. However, annual contribution limits require an intentional priority cascade.

Step 1: Capture the Full Employer 401(k) Match. A dollar-for-dollar employer match is an immediate, risk-free 100% return on capital. Never leave an employer match uncaptured before moving to any other investment vehicle.

Step 2: Fund a Health Savings Account (HSA) if Eligible. If you are covered under an eligible high-deductible health plan, the HSA is the only account in the U.S. tax code that offers triple tax advantages: contributions are tax-deductible, investments grow tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are never taxed. When treated as an investment vehicle rather than a spending account, it acts as a premier retirement savings buffer.

Step 3: Maximize Roth or Traditional IRAs. Individual Retirement Accounts give you unfettered choice of custodians and investments, avoiding the fund restrictions and administrative fees common in employer plans. If your income exceeds statutory limits for a direct Roth contribution, evaluate whether a backdoor Roth conversion makes sense.

Step 4: Complete the Remaining 401(k) Elective Deferral. Once individual accounts are funded, return to your employer 401(k) or solo 401(k) to utilize the remaining annual contribution capacity.

Step 5: Taxable Brokerage and Direct Real Asset Investments. Once tax-advantaged buckets are utilized, excess cash flow flows into taxable accounts and illiquid real assets, where depreciation, 1031 exchanges, and long-term capital gains rates take over as tax shields.
